Everyone loves to celebrate St. Patrick’s day with a cold, frothy beer! However, for those of us that suffer from digestive distress this day of beer drinking festivities can mean painful digestive symptoms. The team and I ventured out to the local LCBO to see what types of gluten-free beers they offered for all our beer-loving friends. Trying one of these alternatives will allow you to enjoy the festivities, while keeping your gut happy :). Here is an overview of what we found!
Bard’s Gluten-free Beer
- Sorghum Malt Beer
- Style: American lager
- Body: Medium
- Colour: Amber
- Bitterness: Low
- Aroma: Floral
NOTE: We found this beer light and refreshing although it lacked the classic beer flavour.
St. Peter’s Gluten-free Beers
- Made in Suffolk, England
- Brewed from sorghum
- Style: Pilsner lager
- Aroma: Citrus and mandarin
- Body: Strong
- Bitterness: Strong (hoppy)
- Aroma: Floral
New-Grist
- Brewed from rice and sorghum
- Made in America
- Style: Pilsner
- Aroma: Light and fruity
- Flavour: Crisp and refreshing
NOTE: This is the first choice of many of my beer-drinking clients.
Nickel Brook Gluten-free
- Pale ale
- Brewed from sorghum (demerara sugar and pear juice)
NOTE: This beer was light, however it had a very strong hoppy flavour.
La Messagere
The selection and variety of gluten-free beers will vary at different LCBOs depending on the size and location of the store. Enjoy one of these beers this St. Patrick’s day to avoid gluten, but keep it limited to just one or two to avoid digestive distress!
Much love & Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
