As I mentioned in my previous post, I was on a trip to Halifax in April and spent my meals testing out restaurants that offered gluten-free alternatives. Of course, I am very conscious of FODMAP foods as well, so wherever I go, I try to choose the menu items with the least amount of garlic, onions, dairy, and other ingredients. I love finding a coffee shop that serves almond milk and a pizza parlour with gluten free crust! I had a great eating adventure in Halifax and here are two of my favourite restaurants that do their best to accommodate for food intolerance, especially gluten.

Halifax wooden monkey2

The Wooden Monkey

A lovely two floor restaurant in downtown Halifax. The owner, Lil MacPherson opened this friendly place after a hurricane in 2003 left her asking questions about the Nova Scotia food supply. She started this restaurant to connect with local suppliers and help support Nova Scotia’s food culture.

The space is sweet and unpretentious with mix and match wooden tables and chairs and big windows letting light shine in. The menu offers a variety of options for everyone in your tribe from seafood to pizza to bowls. One of the best things for us IBS’ers is that on the menu there is clear indication of which items are vegan, gluten-free, raw or has nuts or dairy. How wonderful! Sometimes it can be a real pain to ask your server a million and one questions about the food – well this menu takes a lot of guesswork out of it. As well, the servers are friendly and happy to answer all my other foodie questions. I had a lovely time and enjoyed scallops, salad, and the fish cakes, mmmmmmm! Highly recommended.

Bramoso Pizza

A gourmet pizzeria offering a homemade gluten-free crust and specialty toppings. I have been eating out so much lately at high-end restaurants, I really wanted some down to earth food in Halifax. After having a craving for pizza a Google search helped me find Bramoso. With a homemade gluten-free crust, it showed this restaurant actually cared to make all food taste delicious, no matter what your preference or intolerance. And let me tell you – this was one of, if not the BEST gluten-free pizza crust I have ever eaten.

Bramoso also has wheat crust of course in addition to dairy free and vegan options for pizza, which makes this another great choice for your whole crew! There is no reason to not visit this restaurant! We had to take a little drive to get here, but it really wasn’t too far from downtown. It’s totally worth the drive or cab ride! We tried the dairy free cheese which is a product they make from Nova Scotia organic tofu. The texture and salty taste is lovely – it was actually our favourite of the three pizzas we ordered!

I highly reccommed trying both the gluten-free crust and dairy free cheese. A winning pizza for following a low FODMAP diet – just ask them to leave out the onions and keep it to just one glass of wine 😉

Thanks to the Wooden Monkey and Bramoso for helping me eat delicious and nutritious food while sticking pretty close to low FODMAP eating. I will be saying YES to any opportunity to head back to Halifax!

Much love & good eating,
